The Elmore County Commissioners scheduled a “critical emergency meeting” at 1 p.m. at the Elmore County Courthouse over concerns raised by a landfill fire that apparently broke out Monday.
The landfill is located on private property off Simco Road in Elmore County, and is operated by Idaho Waste Systems.
During the meeting, officials said that the Ada County landfill is willing to take in garbage from Elmore County due to the fire.
Residents living near the landfill have expressed concerns over environmental and health issues caused by smoke from the fire.
Representatives from the Central District Health Department and the State Department Environmental Quality attended the meeting to offer input.
“There are certainly possible health issues over the particulate matter and fumes, since what appears to be burning is trash and plastics," said DEQ spokesman Aaron Scheff. “The property owners thought they had the fire put out, but it evidently flared up against last night or early this morning,” he added.
