According to Idaho Health and Welfare, the state may be facing severe consequences from a new law that limits access to Naloxone, better known as Narcan, which is a lifesaving drug administered to reverse an opioid overdose.
Under 2023 HB350, access to Naloxone becomes limited, provided only for first responders. This new law went into effect July 1 this year.
In the previous calendar year, Idaho reported over 12,000 reversals, causing some to be concerned about what impact the new law will have on Idahoans.
For now, Narcan is available to anyone through their pharmacy for free if they are on Medicaid, others may have to pay for it.
Last year, federally funded kits were available through many other agencies, including shelters, crisis centers, and hospital emergency departments.
