BOISE, Idaho — The City of Boise announced that 8th Street between Main and Bannock will close to vehicle traffic on August 31. The closure is to allow for more outdoor dining as part of the Boise on the Block initiative.

This stretch of 8th Street has several restaurants, including Prost German Pub, Fork and Bittercreek Alehouse. The Boise City Council approved Boise on the Block back in May. The goal of the initiative is to allow restaurants to be safely open and have the health of residents and employees protected by allowing for social distancing.

Businesses interested in expanding their outdoor eating options have four concepts to consider:

  • Longitudinal Expansion: expand patio seating laterally along a building.
  • Parklet Expansion: expand patio seating in parking spaces.
  • Sidewalk Expansion: Same model as 8th Street, where existing patio seating is extended to the sidewalk
  • Partial Street Closure: Close a street fully to allow for patios to expand and reroute sidewalks and bike lanes.
