About a million more Americans will be traveling this holiday season than last year. More than 225,000 of those will be Idahoans.

Because of the increased traffic, AAA says they are expecting to rescue thousands of motorists this year due to dead batteries, flat tires, and lockouts.

To try and avoid those, AAA has some tips.

"One thing we want to emphasis from the safety standpoint is just making sure people are safe on the roads. Build in a little extra time to get where you’re going. Don't drive for too long or too late at night, have those trips kind of spread out and definitely have those emergency supplies like food and water," said Matthew Conde, AAA.

Almost 90 % of travelers will be driving to their holiday destination next week so in addition to those extra safety items placed in your car, be sure to check out the car itself before taking off.

AAA recommends having a technician look at your vehicle before hitting the road to check tires including the spare, fluid levels and the battery.
