The Ada County Sheriff’s Office has been asked by the Idaho Department of Correction to investigate the death of an inmate at the Idaho State Correctional Institution.

At 9:49 p.m. Sunday, a cellmate of Gabino Villa alerted guards that Villa had collapsed and fallen out of bed.

When staff arrived, Villa was found unresponsive.

Villa died at 1:30 a.m. at a Boise hospital. Due to the fact that correctional staff was not present at the time that Villa was found unresponsive, IDOC asked the Ada County Sheriff’s Office to investigate.

IDOC routinely asks the Ada County Sheriff’s Office to investigate all unattended deaths of offenders in the South Boise Correctional Complex.

Villa was serving five to twenty years for being a “persistent violator” for DUI in Canyon County, according to a press release.

Villa’s criminal record includes convictions for one count of aggravated driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance and two counts of driving under the influence in Jerome County.
