Boise State linebacker Leighton Vander Esch has announced he's leaving school early to go to the NFL. 

In a statement released on Twitter Vander Esch said in part: 

"I feel now is the best time for me to pursue another childhood dream – playing in the National Football League – something Boise State University, my coaches, my teammates, my family, and my friends have put me in the position to do."

He called the decision to leave early the most difficult of his life. 

 

Vander Esch, who played 8-man football for Salmon River High School in Riggins, was the Mountain West Defensive Player of the year this past season.  He also won the defensive MVP award in the Mountain West Conference championship game.
