Fire crews responded late Monday afternoon a new wildfire near Idaho City.

The Pioneer Fire -- eight miles north of Idaho City and west of Elk Creek -- was reported at approximately 5 p.m. Monday afternoon. When crews arrived on scene, the fire was two acres. Officials say it has since grown to almost 200 acres.

“Fire crews evacuated campers to safety and there are only minor structures threatened. The cause of the fire is unknown. Currently, there are two handcrews, one engine and thirteen smoke jumpers engaged in fighting the fire. Additional resources have been ordered,” said Boise National Forest spokeswoman Susan Blake.
