Boise Fire Chief Dennis Doan is calling for legislators to make it unlawful to purchase or possess illegal fireworks in the Gem State.

Currently, residents can legally purchase aerial fireworks in state limits, by signing a waiver that state's they'll be used out-of-state.

"To sell illegal fireworks, and then sign an affidavit that you wont light them  is like selling a minor alcohol and asking them to sign a piece of paper that they're not going to drink," Chief Doan said.

Just last week, the fireworks-caused Table Rock fire scorched 2,500 acres and burned one home.

“We were extremely fortunate no lives were lost in the Table Rock fire.  It’s time we fix this loophole in the firework law to better protect Idaho citizens, their property, and our firefighters who risk their lives battling these fires,” stated Fire Chief Dennis Doan.

This year fires caused by fireworks July 4 and the early hours of July 5 increased from seven in 2015 to 21, which included two structure fires. 17 of the fires were caused by fireworks.
