Coronavirus: Boise State reports dozens of new cases; East Idaho sees record numbers

Boise State University reported 54 new COVID-19 cases on campus for the week of Oct. 9-15, an ever-so-slight increase from the previous reporting period.

A Friday update to the university’s COVID-19 dashboard shows 12 residential students, 40 off-campus students and two faculty or staff members tested positive this week. BSU reported 53 new cases for the week ending Oct. 8. The recent numbers are down from the Oct. 1 report, when the university added 97 cases.

BSU also reported this week that 22 of its 153 isolation beds, reserved for campus residents who either test positive or are symptomatic and awaiting test results, are occupied.

In total, 456 people at BSU have tested positive: 161 on-campus students, 278 off-campus students and 17 members of the faculty and staff.

Idaho’s positive case count is on the rise. The state reported 652 new confirmed cases and 146 new probable cases on Thursday, matching the state’s all-time record of 798 new total cases, set on Tuesday.

As a whole, the state’s positivity rate is up for the fourth straight week. Of 25,298 tests taken between Oct. 4 and Oct. 10, 11.4% were positive, up from a rate of 10.3% on 25,022 tests the week before.

In Ada County, 108 new cases were reported Thursday, bringing its total to 13,305. Canyon County added 72 new cases for a total of 8,427. Five other counties also had significant increases: Twin Falls County added 86 new cases (2,785 total), Bonneville County 57 (2,916 total), Bannock County 36 (1,421 total), Minidoka County 34 (881 total) and Kootenai 33 (3,115 total).

Both South Central Public Health District and Eastern Idaho Public Health posted record-high numbers for the week of Oct. 4 to Oct. 10. SCPHD reported more than 840 cases in that time period.

All Idaho counties except Adams County have reported community spread.
