Gov. Otter declares October to be Cybersecurity Awareness Month in Idaho

Posted

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month in Idaho, after Governor Butch Otter signed a proclamation reiterating the Gem State's commitment to strengthening its computer security.

The governor was joined by state officials, including the newly appointed Director of Information Security, Jeffery Weak.

Weak's appointment stemmed from recommendations from a cybersecurity taskforce the governor established in 2015.

"Obviously, in a lot of our statues -- especially in the tax department and areas like that -- we do have those things in statues," Otter said. "But there's so many other areas where we collect information for the  government, that is potentially dangerous."

Officials say all state employees will undergo additional cybersecurity training to help identify and thwart any cyber attacks, which will take place soon.
