Health officials are urging everyone six months and older to get a flu shot by October.

It does take a couple weeks for protection to kick in. Experts say people who think the vaccine is what makes them sick are mistaken. In reality, the vaccine is meant to lessen the severity if you were to get sick.

This year, the flumist option is not available after it was proven to be ineffective in recent years, so the shot is your only option.

Washing your hands, especially before eating and covering coughs and sneezes goes a long way to help stop the virus from spreading.

Last year, 26 idahoans died in flu-related deaths.
