Idaho Foodbank not holding Picnic in the Park this summer

BOISE, Idaho — The Idaho Foodbank has announced it will not be holding it's annual Picnic in the Park program this summer. The event typically starts in June and offers free sack lunches to kids of all ages in city parks around Boise.

Foodbank officials say that given coronavirus concerns, they have chosen not to hold the program. The kids will still get fed because the United States Department of Agriculture has extended waivers allowing school districts to continue their "grab-n-go" meal programs, drive-thru pick-ups and meal delivery on bus routes. The waiver extends those programs through the end of August.

The waiver allows meals to be served to children outside of the usually required group setting, to support social distancing. It also allows parents or guardians to pick up the meals and bring them home to their kids. The meal bags provide several days worth of meals at once.
