BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- The Idaho Senate is backing a proposal removing an increased registration fee for hybrid vehicle owners that lawmakers approved less than a year ago.
Senate lawmakers voted 27-7 on Wednesday to exclude hybrid vehicles from a new $140 annual fee.
The Idaho Legislature approved a $95 million transportation funding plan last spring that raised vehicle registration fees and the gasoline tax by 7 cents. Electric and hybrid vehicles faced higher registration fees because lawmakers argued those owners don't pay as much at the pump.
Sen. Shawn Keough, a Republican from Sandpoint, says she made a mistake approving the hybrid fee hike because there isn't enough data to back up the claim hybrid owners are use less fuel than other high-mileage vehicle owners.
Removing hybrids reduces $1 million for maintaining the state's roads and bridges.
