Idaho shattered its record for the highest single-day increase in total coronavirus cases Friday, reporting 777 new confirmed and probable cases. The previous record for total new cases was set July 16, when the state recorded 681 new cases.

The state’s health districts reported a total of 635 confirmed coronavirus cases Friday and two new deaths in Bonneville and Gooding counties. At least 506 people have died due to COVID-19 since the pandemic began in Idaho.

Friday’s numbers were driven by significant case increases reported by health districts in largely rural parts of Idaho, with health districts based in Twin Falls, Pocatello and Idaho Falls reporting more than 100 new cases each. Ada County added 88 new confirmed and 34 new probable cases, according to Boise-based Central District Health.

Four of Idaho’s top five case totals have occurred in the past four days: 670 on Tuesday, 666 on Wednesday, 667 on Thursday and 777 on Friday.
