New options are coming to Idaho driver's licenses in 2018. Idaho's version of the federal REAL ID, the Star Card, will be available in January.
A Star Card is not required, but it will be federally required to have one in October 2020 to fly commercially or access a federal facility. You can still opt for a regular license if you don't plan on doing those things. Another form of federal identification, like a valid U.S. passport, would still work as well.
The Star Card requires you to provide more personal information. You will need your birth certificate, social security card, and a utility bill and mortgage statement to prove Idaho residence. The Idaho Transportation Department is expecting the Star Card to take longer to process. ITD advises opting for the Star Card the next time you need to renew your license, rather than waiting until 2020.
ITD offers more information about the REAL ID here: itd.idaho.gov/starcard. Use the Add the Star tool to find out if the Star Card is right for you.
