Land chosen for new high school in Kuna, construction to begin next summer

Kuna is one step closer to opening a second high school in the district.

The Kuna Joint School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to accept an option to buy 60 acres for the new high school, located on the northeast corner of Columbia and Linder Road, for $1.5 million.

Officials say schools are feeling Kuna's population growth, with about 500 new homes being constructed annually.

"Everything that we were able to calculate suggests that we need a new high school," said the district's director of communications, David Reinhart. "The high school we're standing in is going to be at least 250 students over capacity this coming year, and we need space and we need it relatively soon."

Construction will begin next summer and is set to be completed by August of 2020.

A committee will help determine the name, colors and mascot for the school.
