MERIDIAN, Idaho — The 29th annual Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Firefighter Stairclimb is scheduled for March 8 in Seattle. Eight Meridian Firefighters are training for the vigorous stair climb and raising funds for the LLS.
In preparation for the event, Meridian firefighters are spending their days off from work training on the 19 flights of stairs at the US Bank Building in downtown Boise. Though a feat on its own, it pales in comparison to the 69 flights the firefighters will climb in 70 pounds of gear.
“This event is in honor of patients, survivors, and those we have lost to blood cancer,” said Meridian Firefighter Grant Hamilton, “It’s important that we are ready, not just physically, but mentally.”
The Meridian Fire Department will continue to raise funds for LLS at the Meridian Dutch Bros Coffee on Fairview on February 28 6:30 am-11am. Customers will see participating firefighters on-site training on a stair climber in full gear.
“So far we have raised roughly $16,000 of our $17,000 goal,” said Meridian Firefighter Nick Piccono, “We appreciate the continued support Meridian citizens provide as we give back to something we are very passionate about.”
