A Meridian man is preparing for the bike ride of his life, which will take him from coast to coast.
Friday, June 9, marks day one of Dan Ekenberg's 4,000-mile bike ride from Oregon to Virginia -- all for a special cause.
It's the memory of Ekenberg's brother, Bob, motivating him to embark on a 4,000-mile bike ride from Florence, Oregon to Yorktown, Virginia.
"Back in 2002, my older brother died of cancer and I'm doing it in his memory," Ekenberg said.
The coast-to-coast trek is also in honor of his son, Nick, who will enlist as a United States Airman this summer -- inspiring Ekenberg to name his journey "Take Time for Life."
Ekenberg expects this ride to take three months to complete, and his co-workers at Office Value in Meridian have been a tremendous support. Some have even stepped up to take care of his dog, Ace, while he's away.
"Everybody in the building is giving me all kinds of encouragement," Ekenberg said. "And my boss is actually taking time out of his weekend, away from his family, to drive me up to Oregon to get started."
Ekenberg will be keeping a digital journal throughout his ride. Visit his Facebook page or his blog to keep up on his journey.
