ONTARIO, Ore. — Police have arrested 19 year old Louis Duran, and 27 year old Gerardo Lopez for the death of 25-year-old Jonah Reyez. It all happened outside a pot shop, but Ontario Police say that is just a coincidence in a town that's only gotten safer since marijuana became legal.
"It's a random crime. It's not something indicative of our community," says Steven Romero, Ontario Police Chief, "There was a heated debate about the color of shoes that Lopez was wearing so i think in gang terms they call one another out based on what they're wearing and the color of clothing."
Thanks to ever-present security cams and many witnesses, it took just six hours to arrest two suspects. Romero says since he started 8 months ago, he's focused heavily on preventing violent crime. And compared to last year, he says it's working.
"We've been fortunate where violent crime has gone way down here," says Romero.
Once the suspects in this case are extradited from Canyon County, Romero says they'll face the full force of the law.
"We will be seeking charges for both murder one or two on Duran and assault one on Gerardo."
Romero says the victim, Reyes, was a resident of Ontario. The two suspects were from Nampa.
