BOISE, Idaho — Registration is underway for girls who want to learn how to computer code. The Discovery Center of Idaho offers classes every year and there are 20 spaces open.

However, due to the coronavirus, only half of them are in person. The other half are online.

The deadline to apply is September 30 and applications should include a short essay, teacher recommendation and short answers to some questions.

"The main thing is just building and seeing the confidence grow in all these girls through the course of the class," said Emily Mahon, education director at the Discovery Center. "And seeing them really consider this as an option moving forward, and even so, learning these skills that they can just apply in their lives wherever they end up going."

The camp is free for those who qualify, AT&T covers the $500 cost. The camp runs Saturdays from November 7 to December 12.

The first four sessions are devoted to building coding skills and providing mentorship. The final two sessions focus on planning and running coding activities for the Hour of Code event during the last session on December 12. You can find a link to apply here.
