Deputies are investigating the case of a Canyon County toddler who was killed Wednesday night after being accidentally run over by his father.

About 7:45 p.m., Canyon County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a child being struck by a vehicle at a residence in the 15000 block of Barrett View Circle, south of Caldwell.

Deputies and medical personnel arrived as the parents of the 18-month-old victim were performing CPR. The child was transported to a local hospital and later died of his injuries.

“Deputies learned the father of the child had gotten into his pickup to leave. The child was also outside and as the father was backing up, the child ran behind the truck,” said Canyon County spokesman Joe Decker. “The father did not see the child as he backed up, resulting in the child being run over. The mother of the child saw the child running up behind the truck and attempted to alert the driver, but he did not hear her yell.”

The child has been identified as Mick Squires, Decker said.  The driver was 29-year-old Todd Squires.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Idaho State Police.

There is no indication of drugs or alcohol being involved in the incident.

“The case will be submitted to the Canyon County Prosecutor for review. At this time, no charges have been filed,” Decker said.
