Historic Simplot mansion torn down

Posted

The Simplot family home located off Bogus Basin Road is being demolished.

The home has become a well-known landmark in the Treasure Valley, attracting visitors to the hill in all four seasons of the year.

"It's not just a house, it's 'the house on the hill,'" Preservation Idaho spokesman Dan Everheart said.

A press release from the J.R. Simplot Company explains that the home will be torn down over the next ten days.

“For more than a decade, the Boise home of J.R. Simplot Company Founder John Richard (J.R.) Simplot has been vacant.

Rather than continuing to maintain the vacant home, the Simplot family decided that taking the house down is the best option.

The prominent U.S. Flag, however, will remain on the site. The flag has been removed temporarily, but will be restored once the work is complete.

Work will begin today and will be substantially complete in approximately 10 days. Some final details may need to be postponed until later in the spring when weather conditions improve.

The Simplot family will continue to maintain the land, but has no immediate plans for the site.”
