BOISE, Idaho — Valley Regional Transit (VRT) is going electric. The VRT board approved the purchase of 12 electric buses and charging systems to add to it's fleet.

VRT is joining a nationwide trending of using electric buses. There are around 650 electric buses on U.S. roads currently. Right now, the buses run primarily on compressed natural gas.

"With the 12 buses we're purchasing, eight of them will be replacing the existing fleet," said Leslie Pedrosa, VRT. "Four of them will begin to start service in Meridian with the new service in the begining of fiscal year 2021."

Some of the funding for the new electric buses that should arrive later this year comes from federal grants. You can read more about the electric buses here.
