BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- State health officials have unveiled new rules regarding penalties for not meeting the state's food stamps eligibility requirements.
Kristen Matthews with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare told a legislative panel on Tuesday that agency food stamp recipients currently out of compliance with eligibility standards are allowed to own up to $5,000 in resources.
Non-compliance includes violating probation for drug-related felonies or a household member goes on strike.
Matthews says under the new rule the resource limit would drop to $2,250 or $3,250 for certain households.
Resources do not include owning a home or licensed vehicles if they are used for commuting or transporting a disabled person.
Food stamps are generally thought of as a barometer on a state economy and recovery. Last month, roughly 192,100 Idahoans received food stamps or more than 82,400 households.
