CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) -- A southwest Idaho man who stabbed his girlfriend to death has been sentenced to life in prison.

The Idaho Press-Tribune reports that 23-year-old Brandon J. Shaw of Nampa received the sentence in 3rd District Court on Friday and must serve 37 years before becoming eligible for parole.Shaw in March pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of 23-year-old Chelsey Malone.

Prosecutors say Shaw stabbed Malone 12 times outside a Nampa home while she tried to run from him on Nov. 18.

Shaw told police that he tried to fire a rifle at her but the weapon failed to discharge. As Malone fled, he chased after her and stabbed her with two kitchen knives.

Defense attorney David Smethers says Shaw suffers from mental health problems.
