BOISE, Idaho — Another scam could be hitting your inbox impersonating the Idaho Transporation Department.
The Boise Police Department has confirmed that a Boise resident received an email from someone posing as the "Transportation Department." The scammer tells the receiver of this email that their traffic cameras captured a video of them running a red light. A citation was "issued" and had to be paid or contested in court within two days.
At first glance, the scam appears legitimate as the email address ends with "@gov-co.com."
After receiving a copy of the email, Idaho News 6 reached out to the Idaho Transportation Department for insight in inconsistencies. We're being told, "ITD does not have any red-light or speed cameras on the state highway system used for enforcement purposes."
The Transportation Department also tells Idaho News 6, "we have limited law enforcement authority, restricted to commercial vehicles as outlined in Idaho Code 40."
The public information specialist for the Idaho Transportation Department, Jake Melder, encourages anyone who feels unsure about the legitimacy of an email to contact the agency in question over the phone.
Boise Police has only confirmed one email at this time.
