The Twilight Criterium is underway in downtown Boise. Hundreds of riders are racing for a chance to win cash prizes.
It's the 30th anniversary of the race and it's keeps on growing in popularity.
And they're off. The Twilight Criterium has entered it's 30th year. Race organizers say every year it just gets better.
"Obviously, our amenities have changed: our lighting is better, our announcing system is better, our scoring is better and our bike riders are better," said race director Mike Cooley.
Racers from around the globe are here to win cash prizes. Lap after lap they zoom by at breakneck speeds. At the pro level cyclists go nonstop for 90 minutes. It's a race that requires both skill and endurance.
There's definitely bike handling skills that's involved there's endurance that's involved and then there's the ability ride at a pretty high heart rate for 90 minutes," said Cooley.
And just like the cyclists. the race itself has endured 30 years of history. Fans keep coming back year after year as others discover the sport. It's the fans themselves who make the race a favorite for the competitors.
"They get so much energy from the Boise crowd that they come back every year and that has made this event last for 30 years and we are hoping for 30 more." said Lynn Hightower of the Downtown Boise Association.
Races are starting on the hour every hour with the last competition starting at 8:15.
