UPDATE: The Department of Environmental Quality says the landfill fire in Elmore County is now 99 percent out.
Aaron Scheff of the DEQ says his organization met with Elmore County Commissioners this morning. The DEQ has sent a surveyor to the site to see if Idaho Waste Systems is following its charter and determine if there was any groundwater contamination from the fire which broke out three days ago.
The landfill is located on private property off Simco Road in Elmore County, and is operated by Idaho Waste Systems.
On Your Side contacted the Elmore County Commissioners' Office and was told they are still sending their garbage to the Ada County Landfill for the time being. A commissioners' meeting is scheduled for Friday to discuss how to proceed.
Residents living near the landfill expressed concerns over environmental and health issues caused by smoke from the fire. But the DEQ says because there is no monitoring equipment at the site to test air quality, there's no way to know how bad the smoke was.
There is still no official cause of the fire.
