Voters approved 22 capital projects with that bond back in 2017 and a number of them are ahead of schedule. Three elementary schools, Highlands, Mountain View, and Pierce Park are currently under construction.
The construction at the three elementary schools is happening on-site while students are in session. Other projects, like updating the gym and the music rooms at Boise High School, are already complete. The updates and the rebuilds not only accommodate growth but also help the district implement new security methods.
“When we build a new building, our eyes are to making sure we’re not only providing a great learning environment but also a safe one, and so vestibules which are defined as holding areas where we can check on people before they actually are allowed in the school, that’s a new function," said Boise School District spokesperson Dan Hollar, "when we have opportunities to build new schools we’re certainly going to be looking at increasing securities."
The district is in the preliminary phase of building Harris Ranch Elementary, which will be a completely new school for the district, right in Southeast Boise where the city has seen the most growth.
The schools currently under construction will be open in the fall of 2020.
